This past summer when we went to Utah to visit my family we took the opportunity to tour the Timpanogos Caves up American Fork Canyon.

The hike up was very hot and steep, in fact Taunya got heat stroke on the way down from being in the cold cave and then out into the 100 degree day.

This is the heart of Timpanogos cave.
One of the things I wish I had brought to this cave is my external flash unit. The on camera flash just wasn’t bright enough to get all of the detail I wanted a lot of the time.

The other thing that would have been helpful would have been a very powerful flashlight. With this you could have illuminated the rock pre shot and obtained a better focus.

The rock formations went from white to chocolate-caramel brown and all the shades in between.

A tripod would be ideal in the cave, but alas they don’t allow tripods. Probably to prevent damage and to keep groups moving. I know I could have spent a few hours in there with a tripod taking photographs!

If you have the chance to tour the cave in Utah I would recommend it. My photographs don’t do it justice.
