Shasta Valley Wildlife Refuge Jan 25

Saturday I worked all morning to get some of my chores done so I could head out and take some photographs for a couple of hours!  My end goal was the Shasta Valley Wildlife Refuge, but I drove out Yreka-Ager road to the county airport to look for wildlife on the way.

I found this awesome juvenile bald eagle on a telephone pole.  Unfortunately I couldn’t get on the facing side for a good photo because the sun was already low in the sky and to his back.

A little farther down the road at a ranch with a pond I spotted this Blue Heron and was able to get out of the car and get some shots off as he took off.

The unusually cold December freezing many of the waterways in Siskiyou county, combined with the very low precipitation amounts has made for a very disappointing  waterfowl and raptor photography winter.

I think this is a falcon of some sort but not sure which one.  Anyone know for sure?  It was impossible to get very close to him as he would always fly off.

Oh man need to reach that itch right there!!!!  Ah Yes that feels better 😉

Not very exciting, but black tail deer are one of the few examples of wildlife at the refuge at the moment.

Well, not a very long post, but I wanted to share some of the photos from this past Saturday.

  1. Hey Jason,
I think your mystery raptor might be a rough-legged hawk. They have that little “mask” around the eyes. Anyway, if you want to know for sure, post it on facebook and tag Sky Delight. He is the bird identification expert.

    • Thanks Loree I may do that 🙂 I already changed one I had miss labeled a juvenile bald eagle for a golden eagle. I saw your post of the same bird and knew I had it wrong 🙂
