Labor day weekend Taunya and I took off for our favorite place on the Oregon Coast, Florence. We stayed in a Airbnb close to where we usually stay at Driftwood Shores. Ever since my camera equipment was stolen from Driftwood Shores, I’ve been gun-shy of staying there again.

Sunset with Heceta Lighthouse. Would have been a little better with some fluffy clouds turning colors as well, but this looks good too.
I don’t know how many photographs I have taken at this look out over the 30 years we have been coming to Florence, but it is quite a lot!

Another rare occurrence, which you would think would happen frequently but doesn’t, is seeing the sun setting into the ocean from this location. Almost always there is a cloud bank out at the horizon blocking this view. This seagull stayed on the wall for quite a while allowing me to get just the right photograph as the sun set.

Another fortunate occurrence was this fishing boat sailing in front of the sun as it was setting. It was a little difficult to get the exposure how I wanted it with shooting directly into the sun.

I don’t edit many photographs to Black and White, but many of these beach shots with the grasses look great in black and white. Unlike in the film days I don’t actually photograph in B&W, but rather switch the color photograph to B&W in post editing. Actual B&W photography, the process of taking the initial photo in B&W, is a skill in which I have little experience. Fortunately, Lightroom has some B&W presets and I can play around with contrast and hue in post production.

One evening we drove up the coast to see the sights. This is the bridge up in Waldport, OR taken from a pull out on Hwy 101, south of the city. My favorite lens is my Nikon 70-200mm 2.8E so this is actually a panorama shot comprising 3 photographs.

This is Taunya’s favorite activity, sitting on the beach, or if its cold from the hotel room, watching the view in the next two photographs. Most of the time with a good book as well (see Kindle tablet on lap 🙂 ). Not sure how we have been so lucky most of the time to have sunny weather on the coast.

Well, a few weeks later we came back to the coast and stayed in Yachats, OR. I’ll share those photos soon.
Enjoy!
