Fall Colors At Lithia Park

ISO 200, 32mm, f 5.0, 1/50sec

Last Saturday I went up to the LDS Medford Temple, but on the way I stopped in Ashland at Lithia Park to take some photographs of the fall foliage.  The colors were simply amazing in the fall light!

ISO 500, 55mm, f/6.3, 1/320sec

The lighting was very tricky and difficult going from very bright on the leaves in the sun to dark in the shadows under the trees.  I found myself using exposure compensation a lot so I wouldn’t blow the highlights out too much and still have detail in the shadows to bring out.  This is where the D800 shines, there is so much dynamic range to play with in a photograph!

You may have noticed the ISO is varying from shot to shot.  You may have assumed I had the camera on auto ISO.  I didn’t for several reasons.  First I find auto ISO frequently chooses an ISO rating that is to high for my taste.  Second I wanted to make sure I could use the lowest ISO setting possible to keep as much color in the photograph as possible.

I was using Aperture exposure mode so that I had control over the bokeh I desired in a particular shot.  So what I would do is start out at the base ISO of 100 and see what the shutter speed was chosen for the aperture I wanted.  I would then vary the aperture and the ISO speed so that I had a reasonable shutter speed.

Well, I had a very difficult time deciding which ones I liked best to include in this post.  As always I’ve included the other photos from the day.

  1. You were right! It was hard to pick favorites! The one with the bridge, the bench and the steps (along with all the ones with the pathway and trees and the water) were my favorites… oh, I guess that was nearly all of them! I’d LOVE to go there.
