Camp Ester Applegate

The boy scouts of Troop 58 went up to Camp Ester Applegate in the lake of the woods area on February 22nd and 23rd.  I had the opportunity to go am pick them up and spend saturday with them.  It had snowed about 8 inches over night so the road was snow packed and treacherous.

Camp Ester Applegate is a camp run by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for the young women of the church for summer camps.  During the off-season others can use the cabins and camp here.  We’ve had camps here before for the young men in May in celebration of the Aaronic Priesthood in May 1829.  Most years that we have done this there still is a significant amount of snow although nothing like there was for us this camping trip.

The snow required a hike in from Hwy 66 to the camp which is only a short 1/2 mile.  This is how the road to the camp looked that morning as I hiked in.

It is especially hard to photograph snow and not overexpose the snow in the sunlight and underexpose the trees and people in the shadows.  I found my self using exposure compensation a lot shooting for a underexposure that I knew I could lighten up later as to not lose too much detail in blowing out highlights.

Anyway enjoy the photographs of the scouts playing infection tag in the snow and of the scenery of the Lake of the Woods area in wintertime.

Thanks!
