Big Cottonwood Creek

Over the Thanksgiving weekend my sister Bonnie and I went out to do some photography.  We headed up Big Cottonwood canyon to see if we could get some good snow photographs.  It was really, really cold this morning.  If I remember correctly it was in the low 20s Fahrenheit (about -5 degrees for you Celsius users).  I had trouble holding my tripod with out gloves.  Fortunately, my son Christian was along and had some gloves.  He became my assistant and carried my tripod in between locations along the creek. 🙂

I recently purchased a Gitzo series 3 6x carbon fiber tripod with a new series 2 mag ball head and was anxious to see how it performed on long exposure shots.  I have always had 100-200 dollar tripod/head combinations.  I thought a $1000+ dollar tripod set up really won’t make that much of a difference, but when Adorama.com had the Gitzo legs on sell for 50% off, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity.

I have to admit I was very wrong about the difference a great tripod set up would make.  The Gitzo eliminated vibrations so much better and the better ball head was much more secure and stable.  I also want to mention that the adjustment of the tripod and ball head is much easier as well.  The legs unlock and lock with just a quarter turn of the locks.  The ball head has smooth resistance and locks down firmly and completely in what ever position you want to place it.

Had to feature this last image of part of a frozen waterfall.  Love the detail of the ice and the flowing water.
